Let me tell y'all what happened in this outfit last week. So, Larry stayed home from work sick with a sinus infection. I came home and decided to cook hamburger steak. One wedding gift we received was a very nice cast iron skillet. I decided this would be a good time to finally put it to use! Oh boy was I wrong. I turned the stove on medium high heat because that's what the recipe said to cook the hamburger steaks on (this was only my second time cooking them). When the skillet was hot, I poured some olive oil on, and that's where it all went wrong! It smoked up the entire house! I don't know if medium-high heat was too high or what, but it was bad. My poor sick husband already wasn't feeling well, and then there I go and smoke out the house! Wife fail indeed. It wasn't the first, and definitely won't be the last! And if you were wondering, I ended up cooking the hamburger steaks in my non-stick pan and they came out great! I suppose I will continue to let the cast iron skillet go unused as we approach 1 year of marriage...
Also, I realize now that I forgot to include this blazer in my april closet addictions! How could I forget my favorite purchase of the month? No idea! I guess I shall go update that!
Oh man, that is sad and funny :) I love that you made the effort with your cast iron skillet - I have one too and to be honest I have hardly used it either! Non-stick is just so much easier!
ReplyDeleteLove the blazer - the white trim is awesome and it fits you really well!
You look so cute and put together at the same time! Love it! Also, cast iron is so nice but such a pain. My husband cooks, and I clean, and boy howdy did I have the worst time ever trying to clean the skillet. I can't remember the last time we've used it. I should share some of my wife fails sometime-- Lord knows how many I have! Hope your hubby feels better soon!
ReplyDeleteWe love our cast iron skillet! We use it all the time, especially for steaks. Do you know if yours was seasoned? Most of them come seasoned which I think helps with the smoking (to prevent it I mean). Also, you're never supposed to use soap and water on a cast iron skillet. You just wipe it out with a paper towel and let it season for the next time. Hope you try again! And I love that blazer but they closed all the Aeropostale's near me, hoping to find one online!
ReplyDeleteI wish i knew the answer as to why that happened. Haha so strange! Maybe coconut oil or butter would work better? Or maybe you could just coat the meat in the oil first? Love this outfit, those shoes are adorable!
ReplyDeleteHahaha, oh hunny, things happen! You were just trying to cook something delicious! I almost started our oven on fire once, so merp :)
ReplyDeleteHamburger steak? That sounds good. Add the oil first and let it heat up with the pan. Love your shoes, very cute : )
ReplyDeleteI love that blazer, to bad they are all out of them :( And those shoes are adorable!!

It definitely sounds like your pan was too hot. Cast iron skillets seem more quick to heat up to me, so I usually start mine on medium. Don't give up on yours, they are amazing! Like another poster said, add the olive oil to the cold pan and let it heat up with the skillet as well. Olive oil has a relatively low smoking point as opposed to, say, canola oil. Hope that helps! Oh, and I love those shoes! :-)
ReplyDeleteThis is such a cute look! I love both the blazer and the adorable bow flats :)
ReplyDeleteOoh I love my cast iron skillet! It takes some getting used to, but then they are perfect for just about everything! I learned (the hard way like you did!) that they get much hotter than other pans, they also should heat up gradually. Like I said, it definitely felt weird to have to learn how to use a pan, but it was really worth it!
ReplyDeleteP.S. Such a cute look! The blazer and the flats are so pretty!
haha oh no! My stainless skillet does this from time to time too! I prefer to pan fry pretty much everything in my enameled cast iron dutch oven because it keeps from splattering and doesn't create all of that nasty smoke. :) XO - Alexandra

oh honey! lol. you need to 'season' the cast iron first. even if it came 'seasoned' you still need to do something to it, and it will still smoke up the house. i have used mine twice and i am too scared to use it more, i also fail at being a wife. haha. hubby complained so much when i did it because the smoke made his eyes hurt (mine too, but i tried to be tough).
ReplyDeleteOh no!! I've never used a cast iron skillet. I thought they were supposed to be the best! I wonder why they do that and when it will no longer smoke out your house!
ReplyDeleteLove that outfit! Those little bow flats are just adorable.
Annnnd this is why I never cook, hahaha. I'm always screwing something up when I cook, so I tend to stick to reallllly simple things like spaghetti or homemade pizza or tacos, haha :)
